He started at Auburn University in 1956 and became one of the greatest linemen in school history. As a junior in 1958, “Zeke” Smith won the Outland Trophy as college football’s finest lineman. He was All-American in 1958 and 1959. He was a sophomore starter on Auburn’s 1957 National Championship team. After graduation, he played for the Baltimore Colts on two NFL Championship teams and later played for the New York Giants.
